List of Books and booklets Worth Preserving

List of Books Worth Preserving

The publications introduced here are books outside the UTA Book series that I, Toshiaki Kiryu, was involved in producing, and which I believe are worth preserving for the future.

The criteria for selecting these books are as follows: works in which I was deeply involved during the production process; works that convey something about Japan today; works that reflect Japanese history and culture; or works that became deeply connected to my own personal reflections during their creation.

In addition, only materials whose original production data has remained in an almost complete form have been selected.

By clicking the "PDF" link on the far right, you can read the full text through the Internet Archive viewer.

Please note: For books originally printed in vertical Japanese format and bound on the right, the viewer is optimized for Western-language books. Therefore, instead of displaying two-page spreads, the pages are best read by scrolling vertically.

Educational Bon Dance Record for Children This video presents both sides (A and B) of a prewar Japanese educational SP record, produced around 1935 for children’s Bon dance practice. MP4 1935 VIEW
Children's Bon Dance Song (Prewar Japan, ca. 1935 This video presents a restored recording of a children’s Bon dance song from prewar Japan, originally produced around 1935 as an educational SP record. MP4 1935  VIEW
Girls’ Bon Dance Song (Prewar Japan, ca. 1935) This video presents a restored recording of a girls’ Bon dance song from prewar Japan, originally produced around 1935 as part of an educational SP record. MP4 1935  VIEW
Kimigayo (Japanese national anthem) and Army Parade This record appears to be from the very early days of record production in Japan, and even as an amateur, I suspect it's an important historical recording. MP4 1903  VIEW
軍隊喇叭(日課諸号令/君が代/国の鎮め) Military bugle call This record was played by buglers from the Army Toyama School. In military life, bugles are an integral part of everything from sleeping and waking up to eating meals. MP4 1940 VIEW
Patriotic Songs for Children (Wartime Japan) – “Shōkokumin Aikokuka” & “Mikuni no Kodomo” It is our sincere hope that a time when children are made to sing such songs will never return. This recording is preserved as an important historical artifact, offering insight into the cultural and social conditions of wartime Japan. MP4 1938 VIEW
Teichiku Children's Records 13: Wartime Nursery Rhymes While the song itself doesn't have much of a wartime feel, the lyrics of "The Village's Raggedy Horse-Drawn Carriage" include expressions that evoke wartime, such as "Children playing soldiers line up on the hill again today to take their leave," and the word "ragged horse-drawn carriage," which refers to a crude passenger carriage, gives it a sense of the era. MP4 1933  VIEW
New Hinomaru Children's Records 16: "My Heavy Bomber" and others The album contains six songs: "My Heavy Bomber," "Strong Japanese Soldiers," "Air Combat," "Playing Soldiers," "I Want to Ride in a Tank Too," and "Puppy Shanko Shanko." However, with the exception of "Puppy Shanko Shanko," all of them have content that you wouldn't want your child to sing. MP4 1935  VIEW
Nonsense: A Night in Yoshiwara This recording features “Nonsense: A Night in Yoshiwara – Soken (Hiyakashii)” by Mikimatsu Yanagiya, a popular entertainer of prewar Japan known for his comic storytelling, vocal imitation, and musical narration. MP4 1930 VIEW
On the Reception of Mickey Mouse in Prewar Japan From the label, we can see that this record was recorded by the Kyoto studio of Shochiku Records as a promotional release. Since Shochiku Records existed from 1932 to 1939, this record must have been produced sometime within that period. By 1936, as seen in the aforementioned animation, Mickey Mouse had already been reinterpreted as a villainous figure. However, in this record, Mickey is portrayed as “cute” and “innocent.” MP4 1936 VIEW
Shirahama Yuzaki Onsen Tour – A Journey Through Japan’s Coastal Hot Springs A tour bus guide from around 1930. The tour takes you around Shirahama and Yuzaki Onsen. The music is accompanied by the Teichiku Orchestra. The guides are Meiko Bus conductors Kimiko Sugimoto and Takako Morimoto. The insert song, "Shin Shirahama Kouta," is sung by Shizuko Ikuno. MP4 1930 VIEW
Kayoi Whale Song The Whale Museum is located in Kayoi, Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Director Hayakawa of the museum sang the "Kayoi Whale Song" for us. It is a celebratory song that is always sung at the whale festival and is designated as an intangible cultural property of Nagato City. While singing, people are required to rub their hands together rather than clap. This is said to be a way of paying tribute to the whales that sacrificed their lives, as well as to the calves and fetuses that lost their lives along with them. MP4 2015 VIEW
